Los Angeles artist and musician Marnie Weber taps the dark side of Brother Grimm (if that is possible) with her photo collages and costumes. Using a semi-regular cast of costumed animal and human characters, Weber shares the dark wonderland of her subconscious. Over the span of 20 years her series of videos, collages, sculptures, music and performances elicit the uneasy vulnerability and eeriness conveyed by classic folklore tales.

Weber began her career as a musician after studying at UCLA. She was a member of the 1980s art band The Party Boys and has independently released countless solo albums. She started making collages in the early 1980s, inserting images of women cut out from pornography sources into serene desert and forest settings, to create haunting scenes. Weber won an underground reputation for her deadpan stage presence, quirky costumes, and the feminist-tinged eccentricity of her lyrics and collages.

This month, Weber is showing a new film entitled The Truth Speakers: The Sea Of Silence at the Simon Lee Gallery, the latest chapter in the ongoing saga of her ethereal all-girl experimental band The Spirit Girls. The multifaceted exhibition of film, sculpture and collage will immerse the viewer in the uncanny world of Weber’s imagination. The central focus of the show is the film which is a modern day fable the girls play out narratives of passion and transformation in their endeavour for spiritual enlightenment.
