With 10 self-titled collections under her belt its safe to say that Sandra Backlund is one of the fashion industries largest wells of inspirations. Each season she succeeds in pushing boundaries of conventional design and knitwear techniques to unexplored territories, and ALWAYS delivers a jaw dropping collection. Falling nothing short of this standard is Backlund’s SS 2010 Collection featured here with signature photography by Peter Gehrke.
I discovered Swedish photographer Peter Gehrke when I was reviewing the FW 2009 Sandra Backlund collection awhile back. There was a magic present in those pictures that sparked my intrigue. It seemed as though the the clothing and the models were shot in different light and then merged together, but to be honest I was even questioning if it was a photo or an illustration because of softness of the girls. He images often portray a feminine heroine that is both striking and depicts a kind of nonchalance in her demeanor. Each of these intricately smocked and hand manipulated garments are all the works of the talented Swedish designer Helena Hörstedt. I fell in love with her garments as soon as I set eyes on them. she is definitely another insanely creative designer to come from Beckmans School of design which also gave us the likes of the knitwear extraordinaire Sandra Backlund.
I have always been a fan of big exaggerated and unpractical fashion, for example Sandra Backlund or Gareth Pugh creations. The crazier the better. Iris Van Herpen’s work is just outstanding and insane. It seems as if she picks a technique or a certain look and just times it by a thousand to create these magnificent highly detailed garments.
This is her more recent Autumn Winter collection entitled “Mummification”. I love the use of the shoe lace tied all around the body, it reminds me of an old collection by Bora Aksu where he used the same technique. The photo-shoot just captures the beauty of this collection completely.

For her latest collection Sandra Backlund has collaborated with Maglificio Miles (an Italian knitwear manufacturing company). The collection was shown at the White Club back in March. The designs are reminiscent of her previous collections”ink blot test” and “blank page” but this time around in black. Her pieces are all made by machine and in much finer yarn. Wool/Cashmere blends were used giving a much lighter finer garment as opposed to her previous heavier designs.
To celebrate London Fashion Week, Selfridges have teamed up with AnOther Magazine for a very special installation at the London store. As a salute to British talent, beautiful actress du jour Tilda Swinton will grace the cover of AnOther shot by Craig McDean, wearing dresses made exclusively by British designers; Peter Pilotto, Craig Lawrence, Louise Goldin and Mary Katrantzou. (she wears also one of our Favorite designer Sandra Backlund ) -The issue of AnOther will also feature interviews with Miuccia Prada, Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood and Nicolas Ghesquiere.
