Chris Jordan, world-renowned photographer and environmental activist, showcases his stunning eye-opening presentation on the American Mass Consumption. Chris vividly documents the combined effects of our cultures of consumption.
Measuring Mass Culture: like every day, 426,000 cell phones are discarded or 2 million plastic beverage bottles is the number used in the US every five minutes… He heard statistics like that and wondered “what, exactly, does that mean? What does that number look like?” His answer resulted in a unique photographic document that puts into perspective precisely how much is thrown away by otherwise responsible citizens.

Jordan’s slideshow and commentary, based on his highly lauded exhibits, takes audiences through his beautiful and elucidating photographs, documenting such issues as the environment, global warming and other social issues. In 1963 Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘the birds’ was released, which saw the revenge of birds on humankind. to celebrate the film’s 45th anniversary, Mattel, Inc. has released ‘the birds’ themed Barbie® doll, which is based off the ‘the birds’ ill-fated heroine, Tippi Hedren, who fashioned a green skirt-suit during one of the movie’s iconic scene. I’m going absolutely gaga over this news! “To celebrate Barbie’s 50 year anniversary Assouline just released a $500, 128-page tome chronicling the iconic doll’s glamorous history, called Barbie, by Yona Zeldis McDonough.” The Barbie Fashion Book is a larger than life Barbie format with actually photos tacked onto the pages so you can remove them and frame them if you wish. “More than a dozen designers have outfitted her since she first hit shelves in 1959, including Givenchy, Versace, Vera Wang, Donna Karan, and Zac Posen.”

Founders Mauricio and Roger Padilha launched MAO MAG in September 2003. It is published bi-annually, coinciding with New York Fashion week, and explores the worlds of fashion, both past and present, commercial and underground. In its first 8 issues, MAO MAG featured profiles on varied Industry professionals. The latest issue of MAO MAG features artists,designers,performers, and models who have a distinctive presence uniquely their own. MM continues to explore pop culture icons who continue to influence the world today. Last week while in New York I picked up issue #7 of Mao Mag at Ressurection in Nolita because it was all Barbied out and reminded me of the shoot I did just before leaving LA.
