Consumers today are concerned about surviving a range of different ‘onslaughts’ today: the financial crisis, effects of global warming, 2012, global illness, daily stress or extreme weather. They are increasingly drawn to products and services they believe will protect them – or that evoke protection

But the trend is a step forward from previous Fear-based trends. It is an active trend. Consumers today have lost faith in the ability of the establishment or technology to protect them. Trust levels for governments and brands alike are at an all time low. Today individuals know they need to protect themselves.
The Protect & Survive* trend is about being strong, taking back control, making do with what you have around you, and bonding with family, friends and neighbours over common threats.

This socio-economic consumer trend is manifesting itself in several different style trends.

Russian beauty (and now a recently designated ambassador of the Sochi 2014 Winter Games) Natalia Vodianova turns her hand at raising awareness for her charity, Naked Heart Foundation, in her cover shoot for February’s UK Vogue, shot by Nick Knight. The charity provides “safe and inspiring” environments for children in urban Russia and Vodianova invited 40 designers, including Chanel, Valentino and Prada, to create exquisite dresses that will be auctioned off at a fund raising event this April. The wintery fairytale spread “Under Her Spell” was styled by Lucinda Chambers, who seems to have a slight penchant for branches.

After the success of Jade polish, Chanel will launch a new frenzy with an accessory that beauty was not expected. On March 1, marks the launch of trompe-l’œil tattoos inspired by those seen during their spring-summer fashion show 2010 home. Sold around 50 €, these fake tattoos might as well tear rolls on the day of sale, exclusively at Chanel boutiques.

Vol de Jour – A short film by Karl Lagerfeld, starring: Lara Stone and Baptiste Giabiconi for Chanel Spring Summer 2010 Pre-Collection. A 3.30min black & white, with no dialogue and this really 1930’s soundtrack. The old Kaiser is following the trend perfectly, after designer, then photographer he is now a film director – Whats next ?!

For its 2010 Spring campaign, the Los Angeles-based eyewear firm Oliver Peoples partnered with photographer and director Autumn de Wilde and cast actor Elijah Wood (Lord of the Rings, Sin City, Everything is Illuminated) and scarlet-haired Garbage vocalist Shirley Manson to star in the campaign imagery as well as a short film based on the collection…

Past campaign stars have included Zooey Deschanel and Robert Evans. Shot at Silver Lake’s Paramour Estate, this year’s short showcases the duo in a variety of vintage styles that match Oliver Peoples’ retro-inspired spring collection. Internationally renowned photographer and director Autumn De Wilde has had her work featured on the pages of Vanity Fair, W, Elle, Rolling Stone, and V Magazine, and her most recent subjects include artists such as Beck, The White Stripes and celebrated fashion designers, Rodarte.

Advertisers are trying to make you consume whatever it takes, hiring superstar photographer and celebrities, for this latest Absolut Vodka campaign Ellen von Unwerth captures Kate Beckinsale and Zooey Deschanel’s characters as they are immersed in different cocktail worlds.

Personaly I dont know if those ads will make me consume more Absolut, even though the result is beautiful with amazing sets and colors.

With Fly 16×9 has one of  most active player in the fashion video maker industry, you also have some other cool companies like Vision On who just directed this beautiful HD Video Editorial:  “La Demimondaine”. In collaboration with Flair Magazine Austria and starring supermodel Iris Strubegger. The film brings the magazine’s December 09 issue, a 14-pages print cover story to life…

Both the motion footage and photographic images were shot simultaneously using one Hypest digital cinema camera on the market : The Red Camera.
