Though neither of Giorgio Armani’s collection’s made our Milan Runway Review, we took some major trend notes from the Emporio show on the hair. These asymmetric pixie-bob’s were such a distraction I had to go back through the pictures two and a half times to actually see the collection, and even then my eyes kept trailing off to the hairstyles. This is a preview of something big coming. We have seen the pixie come in and out of style and the Bob has been haunting us ever since Anna Wintour became a household name, but its time for a new signature bold, and I think this is the direction. I can finally imagine myself chopping my hair off after all these years.

Elizabeth Carruther’s is a talented Sydney-based graphic designer who goes by the name of No-ellk. I found this series of “Facet Boards”, or mood boards, she created for The Last Magazine and was drawn to all the shapes within shapes. The beautiful geometric inspirations boards are bursting with concepts and colors drawn from eclectic sources which allow each viewer to create their own narrative.

As some of you have already heard us mention, we were not to keen on New York Fashion week this round. The excitement factor just didn’t rise to the occasion. Though our schedule was booked with back to back shows, we spent a great chunk of time capturing the fashion week style, which was indisputably more entertaining than the shows themselves. Our focus was more on the details that make the outfit than who was wearing them.

The follow up to Grandmaster Flash’s seminal rap ‘The Message’ in 1980 was called ‘The Message Part 2 (Survival)’. If 2009 was about consumers ‘getting the message’, then the theme of Survival looks to be a key trend for the near future.

Consumers today are concerned about surviving a range of different ‘onslaughts’ today: the financial crisis, effects of global warming, 2012, global illness, daily stress or extreme weather. They are increasingly drawn to products and services they believe will protect them – or that evoke protection

But the trend is a step forward from previous Fear-based trends. It is an active trend. Consumers today have lost faith in the ability of the establishment or technology to protect them. Trust levels for governments and brands alike are at an all time low. Today individuals know they need to protect themselves.
The Protect & Survive* trend is about being strong, taking back control, making do with what you have around you, and bonding with family, friends and neighbours over common threats.

For Fall/Winter 2010 Alexandre Herchcovitch went Royal Gypsy on us, and nearly knocked me off my chair with his historical references and meticulously styled headdresses. Gypsy trends definitely have a past life nostalgia in my book so it is hard to recreate that fantasy with the wonderment that Herchcovitch fulfilled in my heart. Turbans dripping with chains, beads and bells were only a highlight of the beautiful story he told for fw 2010.  Stay tuned for the recap of the full collection in the SPFW review.
