Referential/ Readymades artist Jeff Koons is exhibiting 3 pieces that have not yet been exposed to the public, on the rooftop of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. “His work explores contemporary obsessions with sexuality and desire; race and gender; and celebrity, commerce, and the media. His choice of objects and images forcefully addresses the impact of class, power, materialism, and consumerism in contemporary life.

Coloring Book

The three sculptures featured on the Roof Garden are from the Celebration series, which Koons began working on in 1993. Balloon Dog (Yellow) is based on balloons twisted into the shape of a toy dog. Standing more than ten feet tall, its highly reflective and brightly colored surface gives the appearance of an actual balloon in a form that would delight a child but would also fascinate any student of Freud. A page from a Winnie the Pooh coloring book featuring Pooh’s companion Piglet was the genesis of Coloring Book. Koons took a magic marker to the page and colored in various zones; in the fabrication of the sculpture, he removed Piglet from the composition, which resulted in this abstraction rendered in cheerful pastel colors. Sacred Heart (Red/Gold), with its sumptuous surfaces of wrapping and ribbon, may suggest childhood—as well as adult—dreams and fantasies about candy and luxury goods, intermixed with the potent Roman Catholic image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. As a group, the three colorful Pop sculptures are characteristic of the artist’s work over the years, offering a certain jouissance and jubilant spirit and demonstrating extraordinary technical virtuosity in the rendering of large perfected forms on a huge scale.

Futbol seems to have been a big theme at Art Basel in Germany this round. With the European Championship about to hit, there quite some art dedicated to the sport. SHOWstudio partners with NIKE to challenge established and emerging artists, designers and creatives to devise new work inspired by the relationship between art and football.

A team of 11 selected artists from around the world, including Gareth Pugh, Alice Hawkins, Sølve Sundsbø and Rebecca and Mike, have been invited by SHOWstudio and Nick Knight to create new artwork that represents ‘the art of football’.

And the winner was a project called :
THE CORE by Patrik Soderstam

The Core is a sculpture of a man I have done. He is dressed in a bomber jacket made up like a classic football. From his head, his mind comes footballs that rise up towards the upper corner of a room.

The footballs symbolizes the mans spirit and soul.

The stigmata wounds on his hands symbolize the almost religious experience of football.

The jacket and the shirt is my design and I have made them myself.

The upper corner symbolizes for me a gateway to another dimension. Here we can experience things we are not able to do in the reality we live in.

The sculpture visualises the true state of mind the man is in. He lives for football - it is his passion, his love and religion - his meaning of life.

My idea is for people to see and feel how serious and important football can bee. Football is one of the things in our age of time that is a substitute to religion, a place where we can find the meaning of life, where we can feel at home and somewhere for us to escape to.
one final winner’s work will be featured on a new, limited edition series of Nike Dunks.

So I went on a crash course of German artist, Tim Eitel’s work after spotting his oil painting Boot, 2004 in a magazine. It’s hard not to be fascinated by the enigmatic image of a couple rowing through an interior space, the mystery of the narrative just sort of slaps you in the face and then draws you in closer.

I dug further and I’m kinda obsessed. He used to do more referential stuff with obvious pointer clues to Mondrian etc. In recent years he has taken a more layered, minimalist turn, placing non-self-aware figures in stark, apocalyptic architectural settings.

He investigates the modern person’s bizarre relationship with nature, how we naively “tamed” its ferocity (i.e., golf courses, parks). You can download an amazing interview/article with him here by clicking on the “A Stage” catalogue. It shows the gamut of his work and painting processes.
