Dark and sexy at the same time! We cannot say that Polish artist Aleksandra Marchoka is not talented – Its true that its a very specific style, which you either love or love to hate, but im sure some of you will enjoy it a lot…

Her style is a mix manga & comics blend together, inspired by death, angels and sex. An interesting mix…

On first look you may just think the work of Japanese artist Kazuki Takamatsu are simply CGI models under the X Ray machine, but on closer viewing you realize that the works are in fact gouache (the method of mixing watercolor pigment with an opaque white pigment in a watercolor vehicle). Takamatsu mixes traditional and modern techniques, from one hand he uses gouache, hand painted monochromed based objects whilst from the other hand he uses “Depth Map” a technique where every pixel on the object is a shade of gray that is proportional to its distance from the object looking at it. The match of these two techniques give a real sense of surrealism, dark fairy tale computer workd and astonishing depth.

As a sudo Art School Alumni I know that art school is where you can scout some of the freshest new talent. This was one of my favorite things to do when I was in school. I always sat next to the best illustrator in my illustration class, the best seamstress in my sewing class, and the best designer in my concepts class, with the idea that sitting in close proximity of them I would be infected by their style and skill. Though I am no longer in school I try to keep close tabs on the art schools.
Here is a sneak peak into a recent Alumni of The Danish Design School MA program, Camilla Lastrina. Lastrina finished her MA this summer and I had a little talk with her to get a better sense of her perspective. i asked her about her inspirations and aspirations and what it took to put together her graduating portfolio.

This weekend I went to the New Museum in New York City for the first time. I am not really sure what took me so long to get there but I think it was a subliminal resistance to prolong my optimism towards to the museum, as a response to the negative feelings I have heard from those around me about it. For the most part it was a major disappointment, but it was the Emory Douglas Exhibition which I saw last that that turned the trip into time well spent.

Materials and surface are the focal points of Judith Seng’s recent work and the pieces showing at The Dock during the London Design Festival are certainly indicative of this.

The perfectly smooth and glossy surface areas of Seng’s pieces are deliberately marred by cracks, which then harmonize with the worked textures of the pieces.

Looks like German artist Ericka Hock loves breaking walls ! Hock plays with walls and their resistance, either dropping them or applying enough pressure to break them. This seems to be here way to challenge the ideas of contemporary infrastructure. An interesting concept none the less…

Italian graphic designer SuperExpresso (or Michele Angelo) is a freelancer based in Barcelona. His portfolio is pretty diverse, from posters to advertising or websites, he likes to experiment with new methods of illustration beyond following the trends.

I really like his typography style, especially his ‘W’ and ‘R’.

Rozanna Hawksley’s brilliantly eery work reminds me so much of Francis Bacon’s paintings. Their austere expression deals with aspects of the human condition, particularly death. “Rozanne Hawksley combines textiles, found objects and embroideries to create small-scale textile installations. They all pack an emotional punch, many dealing with themes of loss, isolation and the effects of war (Hawksley herself was a war-time evacuee).” Her work is accompanied by a self-titled book written by Mary Schoeser, which studies the artist’s process and expression.

In the same style as the Louboutin Ad campaign, except here it is not fashion, but weapons. The Russian based illustration studio Geliographic decided to mix classic still life paintings, with modern weapons. An interesting mix that grabbed my attention!
