As a sudo Art School Alumni I know that art school is where you can scout some of the freshest new talent. This was one of my favorite things to do when I was in school. I always sat next to the best illustrator in my illustration class, the best seamstress in my sewing class, and the best designer in my concepts class, with the idea that sitting in close proximity of them I would be infected by their style and skill. Though I am no longer in school I try to keep close tabs on the art schools.
Here is a sneak peak into a recent Alumni of The Danish Design School MA program, Camilla Lastrina. Lastrina finished her MA this summer and I had a little talk with her to get a better sense of her perspective. i asked her about her inspirations and aspirations and what it took to put together her graduating portfolio.
As Karl Lagerfeld spent part of his childhood on a farm, it seems only fitting that the Chanel built a version of a Marie Antoinette’s barnyard in the Grand Palais to present his Spring Summer 2010 collection.
Lizzie Fortunato’s Jewel Collection is the perfect marriage of seamlessly translated concepts and unpredictable execution. Each piece tells a story, the story of the inspiration and all the handwork that went into fusing together the diverse materials, many of which are found objects. With names like Desert Wedding, Midnight Rambler, Scholarly Nomad, Miner’s Delight, Bounty of Fortune, and Crossroad Blues the young visionary designer shares her journey across the west for her FW09 Collection which she called, “Long May You Run”. I’ve been waiting to get my hands on the new Sibling presentation but this went above and beyond all expectation. This video look book for their 3rd collection is a visual bomb, full of historic references through graphic elements and collage. They have created visual environments for each of their new sweaters using amateurishly montaged animal heads instead of the models that were shot. Great concept and execution by these young visionaries! Check out their website for more fresh collages of the new collection here.
So now Chanel is starting to get interested in the web campaigns, and especially for their Coco Cocoon line, after using the help of Lagerfeld and Lily Allen for the AD campaign (here) – They are now spreading this viral Campaign using Trendy Model/Blogger Daul Kim (see blog here) – Im not crazy about this video production, but…
Named after a Victorian euphemism for a woman’s skill in the bedroom, designers Nikki Dekker and Maayan Zilberman have created intimates that balance provocation and humor, intelligence and sensuality with their The Lake & Starslabel.
The collections showcase the creative duo’s strong, classic, sexy aesthetics and the newSpring/Summer lookbook 2010, shot by New York based Tom Hines, completes the feminine and sensual look with a little hint of danger.

Vanessa Bruno transports us to a beautiful, whimsical world with Jane Birkin’s daughter Lou Doillon for her Spring Summer 2009 campaign. The photo shoot and film (made by Mark Borthwick), is as ethereal, serene and feminine as the collection.
Last night I went to the Soho Grand for the Damir Doma SS 2010 presentation hosted by Seven New York. The looks were set up in a room of their own, on well lit mannequins for viewing only, but of course I couldn’t curb my touch when it came to this collection. Garments of this caliber have a voice and believe me they speak to me, in a way that makes me question my sanity, perhaps it can be diagnosed as a form of Schizophrenia ~ Fashion Schizophrenia, a feeling that words do no justice describing.
The collection had elements of eastern and western influences, though it was predominantly a dialogue between Indian an Japanese aesthetics on exploring “interpretations of contemporary masculinity.” I could compare his avant-garde niche to a fusion of Yohji Yamamoto and Raf Simmons, though his style is taking on a very distinctive identity through his self-titled label Damir Doma. The varying silhouettes, layering and fabrications take Damir’s work to alternative levels of menswear complexity which make him one of the most interesting new designers of our generation.
