For next years 70th anniversary of ‘The Wizard of Oz’, Hong Kong shoe boutique On Pedder has partnered with Warner Bros to commission the most trendy fashion designers to create their own interpretation of the famous red shoes for a modern Dorothy. Including Bruno Frisoni, Alexander McQueen, Erickson Beamon, Giuseppe Zanotti, Pierre Hardy, Marni’s hi-tech heels (that play ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ when plugged in) and Stella McCartney’s strapped sandals or even Azzedine Alaia’s sparkly ballet pumps, the creations are a true homage to the legendary film.

The shoes were unveiled at the On Pedder flagship store on 21 November. At the end of the exhibition, the shoes – including a replica of the original pair worn by Judy Garland in the film – will be sold off in a silent auction and the proceeds donated to charity.

” In an era of mass production, genuine craftsmanship stands out. Dont forget about the collectors’ items of the winter season. These are truely one-of-a-kind pieces, each made with as much care as a painting in a museum.”

This is an editorial from the Winter issue of V Man, that drew me in so deep. It is a forgotten art to create garments with so much love and craftsmanship. And to juxtapose it with this style of photography seemed so moody and appropriate. I can not figure out if photographer Richard Burbridge really played withe lighting or if the images we masked in post. Either way it was a brilliant execution for this project of highlighting the true craft of each piece. I Nearly died when I saw the piece above by Burberry, a cashmere sweater with hand sewn and painted feathers! what!

As fears around the recession grow, and at a time when other fashion designers are heavily focused on encouraging celebrities to wear their products, Alexander McQueen challenges both the recession and Hollywood at the opening of his new Los Angeles flagship store on Melrose…
While the likes of Dolce & Gabbana and Giorgio Armani persist in wooing Hollywood’s finest, there is a growing feeling that the fashion establishment needs a challenge. And McQueen, with his none-too-diplomatic way with words, might just be the man to provide it.
“In times of recession, I think fashion is escapism. When I started in fashion, England was in a recession with Margaret Thatcher as prime minister. I think it’s a great time for new growth…” — (Via The Independent, UK)

Seems like countless magazines are telling me that fashion hats are back. This news, along with Halloween coming up, made me remember that it’s been about 6 months since Isabella Blow, who rocked the coolest and most avant-garde hats, passed away. Along with being an international style icon, director, and muse, she discovered model Sophie Dahl and designer Alexander McQueen.Though she is no longer with us , her mark on fashion continues.
