Cigarettes are to Brian Viveros‘ chicas’ lips as heavily mascara’d eyelashes are to their eyes — absolutely necessary and essential to their fetish-fueled rebellious masochistically hedonistic lifestyle and look. Black eyes and bruises, blood and bandaids, cigarettes and scissors,  bullets and bustiers, tights and tattoos, flowers and fingers, military and mickey mouse — love her lust her, she’s far from lackluster with the most luscious of lips. There is an obvious sense of self-destruction and pain in these gals but instead of it hurting them or rendering them vulnerable, they do it and take it with utmost bravery and pride. That’s just how they live.

BAZAAR The New Shapes 1

As the American Summer wanes, Fall looks have undoubtedly begun to circulate the minds and mouths of the fashion world. Women having the majority of say in purchasing decisions is an undeniable fact, reflected clearly through the following shoot. Supermodels taking hold of this corporate city, embracing well-tailored fitted pieces matched with looser yet structured forms. A black ensemble is set adjacent to a full blown leopard print guise [which one would assume to clash but in fact manages to blend ever so tastefully]. A plain oversized neutral coat is accented with just a tinge of metallic peeking out from beneath and those unexpected silk bunny ears Marc Jacobs got everyone talking about. And, of course, jeweled neck pieces almost overwhelming in size couldn’t hurt either. This particular Harper’s Bazaar editorial shot by Akrans emphasizes precisely what to watch out for within the coming months. See full spread on PaperMode.

INSTEAD OF FLOWER POWER, DEBBIE DID LEATHERI once found a great Perfecto jacket at a secondhand store in California; it was really small, probably a child’s size. I loved it because most people were still wearing hippie-dresses to the floor back then, and we were much tougher with our straight-legged pants and narrow lapels – I guess you would have called our look Euro-mod. I used to hang around the New York Dolls, and they were definitely into those jackets. I remember having one that was black on the outside with red pleats in the back. Eventually, I started noticing lots of women in the music scene doing a “West Side Story” kind of tough-girl look with motorcycle jackets in different colors. My friend Stephen Sprouse did a cartoonlike version of the Perfecto, which I loved because it was almost to the knees. It’s cool that these jackets keep coming back – biker style is an American classic.
