Cigarettes are to Brian Viveros‘ chicas’ lips as heavily mascara’d eyelashes are to their eyes — absolutely necessary and essential to their fetish-fueled rebellious masochistically hedonistic lifestyle and look. Black eyes and bruises, blood and bandaids, cigarettes and scissors,  bullets and bustiers, tights and tattoos, flowers and fingers, military and mickey mouse — love her lust her, she’s far from lackluster with the most luscious of lips. There is an obvious sense of self-destruction and pain in these gals but instead of it hurting them or rendering them vulnerable, they do it and take it with utmost bravery and pride. That’s just how they live.

Tara McPherson was born in 1976 in San Fransisco and raised in LA, is a full-bread American painter, freelance illustrator, poster artist, comic book artist (DC Comics, Warner Brothers, Dark Horse Comics…) and teacher in New York City. She has a pretty impressive resume!  A stylized heart-shaped hole through a person’s chest in the place of an actual heart is a recurring motif in her work. Probably a sign that she has had her heart broken pretty badly at one time . McPherson’s images are thought provoking and seductive ~ people and their relationships are a central theme throughout her work. I am a fan of her work but there are fans much bigger than I, which you can see if you visit her website on which she has a page where she showcases her fans who tattooed themselves with her artwork! French 27 years old Sophie Varela lives and works in Paris.  Captivated by the beauty of the women she uses as an inspiration source, Sophie carries out illustrations for the Press, Fashion and Music Industries. Her glamorous and colorful pictorial work is also published in various Artbooks. In her personal Art which is translated into paintings for international exhibitions, Sophie is very attached to the traditional technics (watercolor, acrylic, oil, pencil…) and with classic construction she conceives her creations as the “Rebirth” period’s artists used to. Marni asked children from Columbia, Tibet, India, Guatamala and Brazil to capture what they say in the mirror. Of the 7,000 drawings they received, the fashion house chose 6 self-portraits to be printed on mens’ and womens’ shirts, available now at Marni’s Virtual Boutique. The proceeds of the T-shirt sales will be distributed between the schools who participated in the initiative. At $120 a shirt, it’s the most affordable item you’re gonna find at Marni!
