This man’s been around a long time. In the music business for over thirty years now, Bragg has collaborated with the likes of Kate Nash, R.E.M, and Wilco. But now he’s finally getting some recognition for his own tunes. The track below reminds me a bit of a more upbeat Morrissey. Its fun and sweet. Great song for Spring tine! Enjoy.

For those heading to SXSW, look out for Supra’s presence. Supra collaborated with Stubb’s Bar-B-Q. A definite out-of-the-box collaboration indeed but a product of the 413 series. Partnering up with Spin Magazine and Stubb’s BBQ, Supra is proud to present the Stubb’s Skytop.
The Skytop takes its name from one of the best places to eat and see live music in Austin, Texas and takes its look from their world famous barbecue sauce. The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s are about to release a new album. We have here for you a sneak peak slice of their awesomeness. It seems Karen O and her bandmates have become progressively less weird and more palatable over the course of their 2 most recent albums. Personally I liked them better at their sassiest and most abstract. I dont know, maybe Karen started meditating and no longer feels the need to scream in her songs for release. She did after all name this album “Its Blitz!” which suggests she has found some form of nirvana. Whatever the case, I still have much love for them, always. Ladies and gentlemen, behold the young Robert Francis. He is a delicious man with talent beyond his years. Evoking legends of before his time, such as Jeff Buckley and Johnny Cash, Francis sings from his broody heart. His lyrics are dark and intense. His melodies-a bit country, a bit bluesy. I realized this week that I have yet to write a post about Beach House. This struck me as being odd, because I have, after-all been listening to them constantly for some time now, and they’re music gets better and better with each listen. Pardon me for overlooking the obvious. Better late than never though! If you aren’t already up on this band’s collection, dig up NOW.

He’s My Brother She’s My Sister : Tales That I Tell
He’s My Brother She’s My Sister, a space-folk collective from Echo Park, was formed by siblings Rachel and Rob Kolar, featuring Lauren Brown as a tap dancing percussionist and Molly Collins on backup vocals. Lauren and Rachel are a performance team- their play “NEW”, an avant hardist portrait of socialites in a post-apocalyptic world, recently had several sold-out runs in L.A. and will soon be touring on the East Coast.

So I’ve been in one of my melancholic moods lately. From the depths of my morose, I bring you the lovely Laura Marling, a much needed alternative to our beloved Feist. A bit younger, a bit quirkier, and a bit more rough around the edges. I recommend you watch her videos on youtube, she is irresistably adoreable. And for her refreshingly raw music, I wrote her this short letter:
Dear Angel Face,
Thank you. Your music bleeds of truth and vulnerability with a surprising sweetness. I spin your record, sip my tea, and I am happy.

I know it may be a little too late to still be talking about New Years, but some things resonate for a bit longer. The only good part of my night was curling up in a fetal position on the floor next to the speaker at my friend Nat’s house listening to the soothing sounds of Sauerkraut, a compilation from Price Pearlman. Sauerkraut features a vast array of some of the finest Krautrock from the 70’s and 80’s. The contents include but are not limited to: Neu!, Can, Faust, Kraftwerk, Harmonium, Cluster, and various combinations of these bands members and solo projects. Check out Silberstreif, the first track on Vol. 3 by Michael Rother, which I consider to be my theme song for 2009 (despite the fact it was recorded in the early 80’s). Rother was a founding member of Kraftwerk and Neu! as well as performing with Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius (the duo also known as Cluster) under the name Harmonium. Some people like to say that you’ll spend the rest of your year like you spend NYE. Considering how much action Sauerkraut’s getting on my ipod, I’d say for the first time that sounds about right.
