Los Angeles artist and musician Marnie Weber taps the dark side of Brother Grimm (if that is possible) with her photo collages and costumes. Using a semi-regular cast of costumed animal and human characters, Weber shares the dark wonderland of her subconscious. Over the span of 20 years her series of videos, collages, sculptures, music and performances elicit the uneasy vulnerability and eeriness conveyed by classic folklore tales.

Band of Outsiders 2009 Fall/Winter Collection Lookbook was shot by designer Scott Sternberg (who recently tied with Calvin Klein’s Italo Zucchelli as the CFDA’s menswear designer of the year) with a sun drenched iconic Polaroid-aesthetic. Sternberg took indie pin-up boy Jason Schwartzman to Chinatown in LA, and the filmic style of the shoot works perfectly with a collection that was inspired by the young idealists from the 1967 film Le Chinois by Jean-Luc Godard. Sternberg has a knack for pouring big names into the smallish pieces that make up his collection; most notably Kirsten Dunst, Marisa Tomei and Sarah Silverman for his Boy by Band of Outsiders women’s line.

I was standing at the Magic trade show two years ago, taken back at the lack of creativity and development of certain clothing brands. To my left was all-over print t-shirt company with shirts resembling a box of crayons symbolically melted with no creative direction, while to my right were diamond bedazzled shirts summing simple t-shirt to feel like a wet rag draped over a body.

Maybe you weren’t in LA when the Lichtenberg pop-up store began at New High Mart. The opening party was a success, but more importantly this bold experiment in retail marketing is taking off, especially with the recent Paper Magazine 24 Hour Pop up store.
